Lasting Power of Attorney

An accident or illness could happen to you at any time rendering you incapable of making medical and financial decisions for yourself. According to Dementia UK, dementia can affect a person at any age, and by 2025 over 1 million people living in the UK will have a diagnosis of dementia.

An LPA is a legal document that gives a trusted friend, relative, or legal professional authority to make healthcare and financial decisions for you if you are not capable of doing so yourself.

It is scary thinking about the prospect of losing physical and mental capacity to look after yourself, but once the capacity is lost it may be too late to make the necessary arrangements.

Without an LPA in place it can be a time consuming and costly process for someone wishing to act in your behalf to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed your deputy. An LPA however is inexpensive and the process is simple.

It is vital therefore to act now, before you lose capacity, and appoint the attorney or attorneys you wish to act in your behalf.

This also applies to the younger generation as they also suffer strokes, other serious medical issues, and accidents. Having an LPA will make coping with these emergencies easier.
